SESSION 6: SAFE MOTHERHOOD – PREGNANCY AND PRENATAL CARE<br />

OBJECTIVES: By the end <strong>of</strong> the session, the participants should be able to:<br />

1. Expla<strong>in</strong> health services related to “Safe Motherhood” and their importance <strong>in</strong><br />

reduc<strong>in</strong>g maternal mortality<br />

2. Describe the role <strong>of</strong> health mediators <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g Safe Motherhood <strong>in</strong> their<br />

communities<br />

3. Describe normal changes that occur <strong>in</strong> a woman’s body dur<strong>in</strong>g pregnancy.<br />

4. Name common discomforts dur<strong>in</strong>g pregnancy.<br />

5. Expla<strong>in</strong> essential components <strong>of</strong> prenatal care and the purpose <strong>of</strong> prenatal visits<br />

6. Name the prescribed schedule for prenatal visits and situations when women need<br />

to seek emergency medical care<br />

7. Expla<strong>in</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> hospital delivery, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g preparations and when to<br />

go<br />

INTRODUCTION: SAFE MOTHERHOOD (15 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Introduce the session by ask<strong>in</strong>g the group what they understand by the concept “Safe<br />

Motherhood”. Correct and/or complete their ideas as necessary.<br />

• Women stay healthy throughout pregnancy and give birth to normal, healthy babies.<br />

• Women are protected from complications dur<strong>in</strong>g pregnancy, childbirth and after<br />

childbirth.<br />

• Women have safe deliveries<br />

• Newborns receive good care after birth.<br />
