SESSION 16: PREPARATION OF GROUP EDUCATION SESSIONS<br />

OBJECTIVES: By the end <strong>of</strong> the session, participants should be able to:<br />

1. Prepare a group education session accord<strong>in</strong>g to the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples taught.<br />

TRAINING METHOD: practical work<br />

TIME: 2 hours<br />

MATERIALS:<br />

Visual aids<br />

whatever visual aids are available and appropriate for the chosen themes for educational<br />

sessions<br />

INSTRUCTIONS<br />

I. PREPARATION OF GROUP EDUCATION SESSIONS (2 hours)<br />

Rem<strong>in</strong>d participants that:<br />

• In plann<strong>in</strong>g their sessions, they need to consider the 6 steps <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g group education<br />

sessions. Refer them to the participant document Preparation <strong>of</strong> Group Education Sessions<br />

• Their sessions need to be based upon one or several objectives (what the mediator wants the<br />

women to know and/or be able to do as a result <strong>of</strong> the session)<br />

• They need to develop a sequence <strong>of</strong> key questions to ask dur<strong>in</strong>g the session <strong>in</strong> order to:<br />

o Introduce the topic and open the discussion. The questions should:<br />

• Be about the topic<br />

• Relate it to the women's experience<br />

• Elicit the women’s <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the topic<br />

o Facilitate and structure the discussion<br />

o Achieve the objectives <strong>of</strong> the session<br />

Rem<strong>in</strong>d participants to consult the two documents: Facilitat<strong>in</strong>g Group Discussion and Checklist<br />

for the Facilitation <strong>of</strong> Educational Sessions as they prepare their sessions.<br />

Prepare a flip chart <strong>of</strong> topics to to choose from for the group educational sessions. Ask<br />

participants to sign up (<strong>in</strong> groups <strong>of</strong> 2) for the topics they wish t<strong>of</strong>acilitate , ensur<strong>in</strong>g that all<br />

topics will be presented.<br />

Participants prepare to facilitate the sessions they signed up for, us<strong>in</strong>g group discussion as a<br />

method <strong>of</strong> facilitation.<br />

Circulate among the small groups as participants work:<br />

• Ask questions as necessary to ensure that they are progress<strong>in</strong>g and that the content and<br />

process they are plann<strong>in</strong>g to use are appropriate<br />

• Respond to any questions participants have about the task<br />
