PREPARATION OF GROUP EDUCATION SESSIONS<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g questions may help the mediator <strong>in</strong> the preparation <strong>of</strong> educational sessions.<br />

1. Who is my public/target group? What k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> group am I go<strong>in</strong>g to speak to?<br />

a) What do they already know about the subject?<br />

b) What expectations/<strong>in</strong>terests might they have on the chosen subject?<br />

c) How many people will likely be present?<br />

2. What are my objectives? What do I want the group to know or be able to do at the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> my session? Educational session objectives are important:<br />

a) they specify knowledge and/or behavior expected <strong>of</strong> participants as a result<br />

<strong>of</strong> the session<br />

b) they <strong>in</strong>fluence the choice <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g methods<br />

c) they <strong>in</strong>fluence the choice <strong>of</strong> visual aids<br />

d) they are necessary for evaluation <strong>of</strong> the session<br />

3. Where will the session take place? How long will it last?<br />

Factors which <strong>in</strong>fluence the choice <strong>of</strong> location and the length <strong>of</strong> time <strong>of</strong> the session:<br />

a) Could the session best be held <strong>in</strong>doors or outdoors (<strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> weather,<br />

available space, number <strong>of</strong> people likely to attend etc)<br />

b) How can I make the space comfortable for participants?<br />

c) How much time will people be able to spend?<br />

d) How much time will I be able to spend?<br />

4. What method <strong>of</strong> facilitation will I use? What k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> questions will I ask to<br />

facilitate participation and learn<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

Factors which <strong>in</strong>fluence the choice <strong>of</strong> facilitation methods:<br />

a) objectives <strong>of</strong> the session<br />

b) characteristics <strong>of</strong> target group<br />

c) time and place<br />

d) methods the animator is capable <strong>of</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g effectively<br />

In general, more effective teach<strong>in</strong>g methods:<br />

• provide opportunity for discussion, feedback and participation<br />

• <strong>in</strong>volve simulations, role play and problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g exercises<br />

• use pictures that can promote discussion<br />

• emphasize reflection, critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g skills rather than the<br />

acquisition <strong>of</strong> specific knowledge<br />

• require small groups (20 people maximum)<br />

• require a facilitator rather than a teacher or 'expert'<br />
