PRINCIPLES FOR USING VISUAL AIDS<br />

1. Prepare visual aids <strong>in</strong> advance<br />

• Avoid distortions <strong>in</strong> size and distract<strong>in</strong>g details<br />

• Show complete objects, especially parts <strong>of</strong> the body<br />

• Show objects from familiar angles<br />

• Use signs and symbols that are understood by the target audience<br />

• In us<strong>in</strong>g visual aids, draw a relationship between the picture and the experience<br />

<strong>of</strong> the target group<br />

• Use real objects whenever possible<br />

• Make sure that the visual aid is<br />

o Easy to see and understand<br />

o Attractive<br />

2. Ensure that everyone can see the visual aid<br />

3. Display each visual aid long enough so that all participants can see<br />

4. If the visual aid has several components, po<strong>in</strong>t out the different elements.<br />

5. Expla<strong>in</strong> important details that may not be familiar to the group.<br />

6. Pass the visual aid around the group if appropriate (for example <strong>in</strong> the case <strong>of</strong> a<br />

discussion <strong>of</strong> contraceptive methods with a small group)<br />

7. Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> eye contact with the group while show<strong>in</strong>g a visual aid<br />

8. Practice us<strong>in</strong>g visual aids before us<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> a group<br />
