Questions for mediators<br />

1. What did you do to put the woman at ease, to ga<strong>in</strong> her confidence?<br />

2. How did you encourage the woman to talk about her problem and/or clarify<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g her problem?<br />

3. Did you respond to the preoccupations <strong>of</strong> the woman? If yes, how? If no, why not?<br />

4. Were there any obstacles <strong>in</strong> the communication? If so, what did you do to resolve<br />

them? What might you have done differently?<br />

Questions for community members/women<br />

1. How did you feel at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> your <strong>in</strong>teraction with the mediator?<br />

2. Did the mediator ga<strong>in</strong> your confidence? How? If not, why not?<br />

3. Was the mediator <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> your situation/problems? Did she help you? How?<br />

If not, why not?<br />

4. What more could the mediator have done to help you?<br />

5. Did the mediator give you clear and relevant <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> a manner <strong>in</strong> which you<br />

could understand?<br />

6. Did you feel that the mediator was judg<strong>in</strong>g you <strong>in</strong> any way? If so, <strong>in</strong> what ways?<br />

Questions for observers<br />

1. Did the mediator:<br />

• Help the woman talk about her concerns, knowledge and practices regard<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

particular reproductive health topic?<br />

• Apply the techniques <strong>of</strong> active listen<strong>in</strong>g (passive listen<strong>in</strong>g, paraphrase, clarify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

questions)?<br />

• Make judgments or moralize? If so, give examples.<br />

2. How would you describe the quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation given to the woman?<br />

• Was the <strong>in</strong>formation clear to her?<br />

• Were the mediator’s explanations simple, correct, complete etc? Did the mediator<br />

lack certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation? Which <strong>in</strong>formation?<br />

3. Did the mediator verify the woman’s understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation given to her?<br />

4. Did the <strong>in</strong>teraction end <strong>in</strong> a positive manner?<br />
