• We have differences <strong>in</strong> experience, different perceptions<br />

• The picture is confus<strong>in</strong>g<br />

‣ What can we learn from this experience?<br />

• If the visual aid is confus<strong>in</strong>g for whatever reason, it is not appropriate/ effective<br />

• One must always test visual aids with a representative target group <strong>in</strong> order to be<br />

sure that they are seen and understood as they were <strong>in</strong>tended<br />

‣ What <strong>in</strong>fluences what we see <strong>in</strong> a picture?<br />

• our surround<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

‣ What must we do to make visual aids as effective as possible?<br />

• avoid distortions <strong>in</strong> size and distract<strong>in</strong>g details<br />

• show complete objects, especially parts <strong>of</strong> the body<br />

• show objects from familiar angles<br />

• use signs and symbols that are understood by the target audience<br />

• <strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g visual aids, draw a relationship between the picture and the experience <strong>of</strong><br />

the target group<br />

• use real objects whenever possible<br />

• make sure that the visual aid is<br />

o easy to see and understand<br />

o attractive<br />

Distribute the participant document Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Us<strong>in</strong>g Visual Aids. Ask volunteers to<br />

read it.<br />

Ask:<br />

‣ What factors <strong>in</strong>fluence the choice <strong>of</strong> visual aid?<br />

It must be:<br />

• Appropriate to the topic and to the group<br />

• Adapted to the teach<strong>in</strong>g/facilitation method used<br />

• Available (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g necessary equipment)<br />

• Portable<br />
