COPING WITH COMMON DISCOMFORTS<br />

Morn<strong>in</strong>g Sickness<br />

Avoid oily or spicy foods.<br />

Eat frequent small meals.<br />

Eat a light snack before ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g and before go<strong>in</strong>g to sleep at night.<br />

‣ Go to the doctor if severe nausea with frequent vomit<strong>in</strong>g occurs.<br />

Heartburn<br />

Eat frequent light meals.<br />

Avoid spicy foods.<br />

Do not lie down immediately after a meal.<br />

‣ If symptoms rema<strong>in</strong> after these <strong>in</strong>terventions, the doctor may prescribe some<br />

medication.<br />

Constipation<br />

Proper diet can usually relieve constipation.<br />

Eat plenty <strong>of</strong> fruits, vegetables, and whole gra<strong>in</strong>s and dr<strong>in</strong>k plenty <strong>of</strong> water (6-8 glasses<br />

per day).<br />

‣ If cl<strong>in</strong>ical symptoms rema<strong>in</strong> troublesome, go to the doctor for a prescription.<br />

Frequent Ur<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Dr<strong>in</strong>k plenty <strong>of</strong> water.<br />

‣ If you notice burn<strong>in</strong>g on ur<strong>in</strong>ation, seek medical help (<strong>in</strong> order to receive adequate<br />

treatment <strong>in</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a ur<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>fection).<br />

Vag<strong>in</strong>al discharge<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> proper hygiene <strong>of</strong> the genital area.<br />

Wear hygienic tampons.<br />

‣ If vag<strong>in</strong>al discharge is associated with itch<strong>in</strong>g, soreness or with pa<strong>in</strong>, or it has a<br />

different odor or a bad smell, you may have an <strong>in</strong>fection. Go to the doctor for<br />

diagnosis and treatment.<br />

Shortness <strong>of</strong> Breath<br />

Walk slowly and rest frequently dur<strong>in</strong>g the day.<br />

Rest and/or sleep with your head slightly raised on a pillow.<br />

‣ If the shortness <strong>of</strong> breath is present all the time and/or is associated with weakness<br />

and fatigue, it may be a sign <strong>of</strong> a problem. Go to the doctor!<br />

Swollen feet<br />

Avoid stand<strong>in</strong>g for long periods.<br />

Put your feet up for a few m<strong>in</strong>utes every 2 to 3 hours.<br />

Compression stock<strong>in</strong>gs can improve the symptoms.<br />
