MALE CONDOM (presentation)<br />

The condom is a th<strong>in</strong>, latex rubber sheath placed on the erect penis before penetration<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the vag<strong>in</strong>a, form<strong>in</strong>g a mechanical barrier between the penis and the vag<strong>in</strong>a. Some<br />

condoms are covered with a lubricant or with spermicidal substances.<br />

Mechanism <strong>of</strong> Action<br />

The condom protects aga<strong>in</strong>st unwanted pregnancy and aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs by cover<strong>in</strong>g the erect<br />

penis dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tercourse. The male sem<strong>in</strong>al fluid (or semen), conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sperm and<br />

(sometimes) disease-caus<strong>in</strong>g organisms, are caught <strong>in</strong> the condom and do not pass<br />

through it.<br />

Effectiveness<br />

Condoms can be very effective when used consistently and correctly. Us<strong>in</strong>g a condom<br />

with vag<strong>in</strong>al spermicide <strong>in</strong>creases its effectiveness.<br />

Advantages<br />

Contraceptive benefits:<br />

• Easy to use<br />

• Easy to obta<strong>in</strong><br />

• Inexpensive<br />

• Safe and effective<br />

• Allows the man to share responsibility for family plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Convenient when need for short-term contraception is required<br />

• Can be easily used by breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g mothers as it does not affect lactation<br />

Non-contraceptive benefits or other advantages <strong>of</strong> condom:<br />

• Provides protection aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs & HIV/AIDS to both partners<br />

• Helps protect aga<strong>in</strong>st cancer <strong>of</strong> the cervix, which can be caused by STIs<br />

• Helps some men with premature ejaculation ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> an erection because <strong>of</strong> the<br />

rim around the base <strong>of</strong> the penis<br />

• Protects women from pelvic <strong>in</strong>flammatory disease (PID) and its complications<br />

like <strong>in</strong>fertility due to the blockage <strong>of</strong> fallopian tubes<br />

Disadvantages<br />

• Must be used at the time <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse (<strong>in</strong>terferes with sexual <strong>in</strong>tercourse)<br />

• Some men compla<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> decrease <strong>in</strong> sexual pleasure<br />

• Slipp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f, tear<strong>in</strong>g, spillage <strong>of</strong> sperm can occur especially among <strong>in</strong>experienced<br />

users<br />

• User must be highly motivated to use condoms consistently and correctly<br />

• Deteriorates quickly when storage conditions are poor<br />

• Some people may be embarrassed to purchase the condoms, to discuss them with<br />

their partner or to use them.<br />

Side Effects <strong>of</strong> Condoms<br />

• Rare allergy to rubber (latex)<br />
