6. How can I evaluate the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> my session? Short term? Long term?<br />

Short term, by:<br />

• The number <strong>of</strong> people and level <strong>of</strong> participation/expressed <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

• The quality <strong>of</strong> responses to questions posed<br />

Long term, by:<br />

• Changes <strong>in</strong> people’s behavior<br />

Add that:<br />

• Dur<strong>in</strong>g the session, the mediator can:<br />

o Observe the group to see if the subject <strong>in</strong>terests them and if they understand the<br />

message.<br />

o Ask open questions to assess what women have learned/what the message meant<br />

to them.<br />

o Ask a member <strong>of</strong> the group to resume what has been said.<br />

• After the session, the mediator should:<br />

o Note if the number <strong>of</strong> people attend<strong>in</strong>g future sessions <strong>in</strong>creases.<br />

o Note if people seek additional <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

o Ask herself if the group does what she anticipated <strong>in</strong> her objective for the<br />

session.<br />

o Ask herself: "How can I improve?"<br />

III.<br />

USING GROUP DISCUSSION (40 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> that participants will prepare and facilitate group education sessions, us<strong>in</strong>g group<br />

discussion as their method.<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> that you are go<strong>in</strong>g to demonstrate how to conduct an educational session us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

group discussion (15 m<strong>in</strong>utes).<br />

[Note to tra<strong>in</strong>er:<br />

• The follow<strong>in</strong>g example <strong>of</strong> a group discussion is simply an outl<strong>in</strong>e. When you<br />

demonstrate such a discussion with the participants, you will very likely ask<br />

additional relevant questions; and the group may well ask <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g questions<br />

and/or add other <strong>in</strong>formation that is not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this brief outl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

• As <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples for prepar<strong>in</strong>g an educational session, the questions<br />

listed under “3” below represent the ma<strong>in</strong> themes <strong>of</strong> the message and serve to:<br />
