INTRODUCTION<br />

JSI Research and <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Institute (JSI)<br />

JSI is a US public health management consult<strong>in</strong>g firm with its headquarters based <strong>in</strong><br />

Boston and with more than 60 <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>of</strong>fice sites. The mission <strong>of</strong> John Snow,<br />

Incorporated and <strong>of</strong> the JSI Research and <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Institute, its non-pr<strong>of</strong>it affiliate, is to<br />

improve the quality and accessibility <strong>of</strong> medical services around the world. Its purpose is<br />

to develop and implement improved management systems and to <strong>in</strong>crease the<br />

organizational efficiency and efficacy.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1978, JSI has responded to press<strong>in</strong>g public health issues <strong>in</strong> 84 countries around the<br />

world and <strong>in</strong> the United States, develop<strong>in</strong>g more than 300 projects and manag<strong>in</strong>g 324<br />

million USD <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational contracts. JSI has done this by identify<strong>in</strong>g and apply<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative solutions and by provid<strong>in</strong>g technical support to the development <strong>of</strong><br />

governmental and non-governmental <strong>in</strong>stitutions and organizations.<br />

In all its activities, JSI collaborates with local <strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g community<br />

organizations and government m<strong>in</strong>istries, and with <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations.<br />

JSI’s multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary, <strong>in</strong>ternational staff <strong>of</strong> over 400 specialists has proven its capacity<br />

to manage an extensive array <strong>of</strong> long-term mult<strong>in</strong>ational and country-specific programs.<br />

JSI contributes to the improvement <strong>of</strong> the health <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals and communities<br />

worldwide by:<br />

- Develop<strong>in</strong>g systems <strong>of</strong> medical care for children, particularly <strong>in</strong> the areas <strong>of</strong> diarrheal<br />

disease control, oral re-hydration therapy, immunization <strong>of</strong> pregnant women and<br />

children, control <strong>of</strong> acute respiratory <strong>in</strong>fections, and prevention and treatment <strong>of</strong><br />

malnutrition.<br />

- Design<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g accessible, high quality reproductive health services.<br />

- Develop<strong>in</strong>g comprehensive maternal health projects, encompass<strong>in</strong>g prenatal and<br />

postnatal care, nutrition, family plann<strong>in</strong>g, breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g, and prevention and<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.<br />

- Develop<strong>in</strong>g the private sector’s capacity <strong>in</strong> the provision <strong>of</strong> family plann<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

primary care health services.<br />

- Design<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g coherent logistic systems, without which no public<br />

health program can run efficiently.<br />
