About the manual<br />

This manual is <strong>in</strong>tended to be used for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Roma</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Mediators</strong> <strong>in</strong> reproductive<br />

health. It provides necessary <strong>in</strong>structions and materials to guide the tra<strong>in</strong>ers <strong>in</strong> the<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workshops designed to improve the competence <strong>of</strong> <strong>Roma</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong> <strong>Mediators</strong> <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g positive reproductive health practices <strong>in</strong> their<br />

communities.<br />

The manual:<br />

• Promotes a learner-centered, participatory approach to tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Leads learners through the core concepts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Reproductive</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />

• Develops and models concepts and skills essential to group education sessions.<br />

By the end <strong>of</strong> the workshop, participants will be able to:<br />

• Expla<strong>in</strong> basic concepts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Reproductive</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and Family Plann<strong>in</strong>g to persons <strong>in</strong><br />

their communities<br />

• Describe <strong>in</strong> simple terms the anatomy and physiology <strong>of</strong> human reproduction<br />

• Expla<strong>in</strong> family plann<strong>in</strong>g methods to persons <strong>in</strong> their communities<br />

• Promote Safe Motherhood (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g prenatal and postnatal care) with members<br />

<strong>of</strong> their communities<br />

• Promote the optimal care <strong>of</strong> newborns with members <strong>of</strong> their communities<br />

• Promote breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> newborns/<strong>in</strong>fants <strong>in</strong> their communities<br />

• Describe to community members measures for reduc<strong>in</strong>g other reproductive<br />

health-related risks (STIs, HIV, abortion, <strong>in</strong>fertility, and breast and cervical<br />

cancer)<br />

• Conduct group education sessions on reproductive health issues <strong>in</strong> their<br />

communities<br />

Each session guide conta<strong>in</strong>s:<br />

I. An overview <strong>of</strong> the session:<br />

• specific objectives <strong>of</strong> the session<br />

• tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g methods<br />

• estimated time<br />

• necessary materials and logistics<br />

- flipcharts/overheads<br />

- tra<strong>in</strong>er materials (conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g technical <strong>in</strong>formation for conduct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

activities)<br />

- handouts – to be distributed dur<strong>in</strong>g the workshop, <strong>in</strong> relationship with<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities<br />

II. Instructions for implement<strong>in</strong>g and process<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities<br />

Based on the overview and <strong>in</strong>structions, tra<strong>in</strong>ers should prepare the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions as<br />

they are designed, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g verify<strong>in</strong>g and prepar<strong>in</strong>g needed materials and logistics<br />

before each session.<br />
