METHODS OF CONTRACEPTION – FACT SHEETS<br />

Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM)<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g to the woman:<br />

When LAM Can Be Used<br />

• Her menstrual period has not returned.<br />

• She is breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g her baby exclusively at least every 4 hours dur<strong>in</strong>g the day<br />

and at least every 6 hours at night, and her baby receives very little or no other<br />

food besides breast milk.<br />

• The baby is less than six months old.<br />

• If all the above conditions are met, then LAM can be used. A longer term<br />

family plann<strong>in</strong>g method should be decided upon and started before LAM is no<br />

longer effective.<br />

When LAM Cannot Be Used<br />

When any one or more <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g are true:<br />

• Baby reaches six months <strong>of</strong> age.<br />

• Menstrual bleed<strong>in</strong>g beg<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

• The baby is receiv<strong>in</strong>g supplemental foods.<br />

How to Make Breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g Effective<br />

• Breastfeed on demand, day and night, and feed from both breasts.<br />

• Avoid <strong>in</strong>tervals <strong>of</strong> more than four hours between any daytime feeds and more<br />

than six hours between any nighttime feeds.<br />

• Breastfeed exclusively or nearly exclusively for about six months.<br />

• Do not use pacifiers, nipples, or bottles.<br />

• Express breastmilk if separated from the baby.<br />

• Do not give the baby other liquids. If the baby is thirsty, the mother should<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k more.<br />

LAM Does Not Protect Aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV<br />

To protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV and provide further protection aga<strong>in</strong>st pregnancy,<br />

use a condom for every act <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse.<br />

Reasons to Return to Provider<br />

• Anytime there is a problem with the method.<br />

• If you condoms or other contraceptive method.<br />

• Either partner th<strong>in</strong>ks s/he may have been exposed to a STI.<br />
