Comb<strong>in</strong>ed Oral Contraceptives (COCs)<br />

Show the woman the pill packet and expla<strong>in</strong> that the method is provided by a doctor.<br />

How to Use the Pills<br />

• Take first pill on the first day <strong>of</strong> your menstrual period or any <strong>of</strong> the next four<br />

days.<br />

• Take one pill every day, at the same time <strong>of</strong> day. Keep pills <strong>in</strong> a place that is<br />

easy to remember such as near where you brush your teeth every night.<br />

• 28-day packet: Upon f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g a packet, beg<strong>in</strong> a new one the follow<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

• 21-day packet: Upon f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g a packet, wait seven days and then beg<strong>in</strong> a new<br />

one. To remember when to start up aga<strong>in</strong>, mark it on a calendar.<br />

Missed Pills – What to Do<br />

Missed pills may result <strong>in</strong> pregnancy.<br />

• If one pill is missed, take it as soon as you remember. Take the next pill at the<br />

regular time.<br />

• If two or more pills are missed, ask the doctor how to proceed.<br />

• Use a backup method for a week.<br />

Possible Side Effects<br />

Most women experience no side effects.<br />

Occasionally, they may experience some <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g side effects<br />

• Nausea<br />

• Unexpected bleed<strong>in</strong>g or spott<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Breast tenderness<br />

• Headaches or dizz<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

• Increase appetite and weight ga<strong>in</strong><br />

The Pill Does Not Protect Aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV<br />

To protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV and provide further protection aga<strong>in</strong>st pregnancy, use a<br />

condom dur<strong>in</strong>g every act <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse.<br />

Reasons to Return to Provider<br />

• Chest pa<strong>in</strong> or shortness <strong>of</strong> breath<br />

• Severe headaches (with blurred vision)<br />

• Anytime there is a problem with the method.<br />

• Either partner th<strong>in</strong>ks s/he may have been exposed to a STI.<br />

• A re-supply <strong>of</strong> COCs or condoms is needed (never run out completely before<br />

return<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
