OBSTACLES TO COMMUNICATION<br />

1. Order<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Tell<strong>in</strong>g the woman to do someth<strong>in</strong>g, without explanation or alternatives.<br />

Examples:<br />

"I don’t care what other people say. You have to …........ "<br />

"Listen to me!"<br />

Possible feel<strong>in</strong>gs generated by these responses:<br />

• Fear<br />

• Resentment, anger<br />

• Sense that my feel<strong>in</strong>gs and needs are not important<br />

2. Threaten<strong>in</strong>g, warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Tell<strong>in</strong>g the woman the negative consequences that will happen if she acts a certa<strong>in</strong><br />

way<br />

Examples:<br />

"If you do that, you'll be sorry."<br />

Possible feel<strong>in</strong>gs generated by these responses:<br />

• Fear<br />

• Resentment<br />

3. Advis<strong>in</strong>g, giv<strong>in</strong>g solutions, moraliz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Tell<strong>in</strong>g the woman how to solve her problem.<br />

Mak<strong>in</strong>g a negative judgment or evaluation <strong>of</strong> the woman.<br />

"You're wrong about that! I couldn't disagree with you more."<br />

"You aren't even mak<strong>in</strong>g an effort."<br />

"You didn't understand anyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> what I said."<br />

5. Label<strong>in</strong>g, stereotyp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
