Progestagen-Only Pills (POPs)<br />

Show the woman the pill packet and expla<strong>in</strong> that the method is provided by a doctor.<br />

How to Use POPs<br />

• Start by tak<strong>in</strong>g first m<strong>in</strong>i-pill on the first day <strong>of</strong> your menstrual period.<br />

• If you recently delivered, you can start tak<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>i-pills at 6 weeks after<br />

delivery or at any time if you are reasonably sure that you are not pregnant<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

• Take one m<strong>in</strong>i-pill every day, at the same hour <strong>of</strong> the day, without any break<br />

(take the first pill from the new packet on the very next day after you have<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished your last packet).<br />

• Keep your pills <strong>in</strong> a place that is easy to remember such as near where you<br />

brush your teeth every night.<br />

Missed POPs – What to Do<br />

Missed m<strong>in</strong>i-pills may result <strong>in</strong> pregnancy.<br />

• If you are breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g and you missed one pill, you are still protected<br />

• If you are breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g, but your periods returned after delivery, OR if you are<br />

not breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g and more than 3 hours passed from the time you are tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the pills ask the doctor how to proceed. Take the next pills each day as usual.<br />

• You should use condoms or spermicides or avoid sexual <strong>in</strong>tercourse for the<br />

next 3 days.<br />

Possible Side Effects<br />

Most women experience no side effects.<br />

Occasionally, they may experience some <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g side effects<br />

• Changes <strong>in</strong> menstrual bleed<strong>in</strong>g (irregular menstrual periods or absence <strong>of</strong><br />

periods)<br />

• Unexpected bleed<strong>in</strong>g or spott<strong>in</strong>g between periods<br />

• Breast tenderness<br />

• Acne<br />

• Increase appetite and weight ga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The Pill Does Not Protect Aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV<br />

To protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV and provide further protection aga<strong>in</strong>st pregnancy, use a<br />

condom dur<strong>in</strong>g every act <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse.<br />

Reasons to Return to Provider<br />

• Extremely heavy bleed<strong>in</strong>g (twice as long or as much as usual)<br />

• Bad headaches that start or become worse after start<strong>in</strong>g to take POPs<br />

• Missed period after several regular cycles<br />

• Anytime there is a problem with the method<br />

• Either partner th<strong>in</strong>ks s/he may have been exposed to a STI.<br />

• A resupply <strong>of</strong> POPs or condoms is needed (never run out completely before<br />

return<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
