INJECTABLE CONTRACEPTIVE – DEPO-PROVERA (presentation)<br />

How Depo-Provera Works<br />

Depo-Provera works the same way as pills:<br />

• It suppresses ovulation<br />

• It creates a thick cervical mucus plug<br />

• It th<strong>in</strong>s out the <strong>in</strong>ner l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the uterus (endometrium)<br />

Effectiveness<br />

They are very effective: only 1 pregnancy <strong>in</strong> 300 women us<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>jectable <strong>in</strong> the first<br />

year.<br />

Advantages<br />

• Is a safe, very effective, long last<strong>in</strong>g method<br />

• Is easy to use (only 4 <strong>in</strong>jections per year) and <strong>of</strong>fers privacy to the user<br />

• Can be used by women who cannot use COCs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g women<br />

• Does not <strong>in</strong>terfere with sex life<br />

• Has health benefits:<br />

o Reduces menstrual bleed<strong>in</strong>g and thus prevents anemia<br />

o Decreases the risk <strong>of</strong> endometrial cancer, acute pelvic <strong>in</strong>flammatory disease and<br />

ectopic pregnancy<br />

Disadvantages<br />

• Has some side effects.<br />

• Must be provided every 3 months by a health pr<strong>of</strong>essional.<br />

• It usually takes 6-10 months to become pregnant after stopp<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>jection<br />

• Cannot be withdrawn from body after <strong>in</strong>jection is given<br />

• Does not protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV.<br />

Possible Side Effects<br />

Most women experience:<br />

• Changes <strong>in</strong> menstrual bleed<strong>in</strong>g (prolonged or heavy bleed<strong>in</strong>g, irregular menstrual<br />

periods or absence <strong>of</strong> periods for many months)<br />

• Unexpected bleed<strong>in</strong>g or spott<strong>in</strong>g between periods<br />

Occasionally, they may experience:<br />

• Headache, dizz<strong>in</strong>ess, and mood changes<br />

• Breast tenderness<br />

• Acne<br />

• Increase appetite and weight ga<strong>in</strong>.<br />
