FAMILY PLANNING<br />

Def<strong>in</strong>ition:<br />

Family plann<strong>in</strong>g means that a person or couple decides freely the number <strong>of</strong> children they<br />

want and when they want to have them, at the right time and the right <strong>in</strong>terval between<br />

births for them. It is the right <strong>of</strong> a couple to have children by choice and not by chance.<br />

Objectives:<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> family plann<strong>in</strong>g are:<br />

Child spac<strong>in</strong>g to enable <strong>in</strong>dividuals or couples to space their pregnancies/births<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to their wishes<br />

Limit<strong>in</strong>g family size – to enable <strong>in</strong>dividuals or couples to limit the number <strong>of</strong> children<br />

they have accord<strong>in</strong>g to their wishes.<br />

Ensure <strong>in</strong>formed choice and correct use <strong>of</strong> contraceptives– to ensure that <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

or couples <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> family plann<strong>in</strong>g are able to choose family plann<strong>in</strong>g methods, and<br />

use them correctly, based on accurate and adequate <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

Treatment and prevention <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fertility – to prevent <strong>in</strong>fertility by 1) counsel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals/couples about the causes, symptoms and consequences <strong>of</strong> sexually<br />

transmitted <strong>in</strong>fections, and 2) diagnos<strong>in</strong>g and treat<strong>in</strong>g STIs <strong>in</strong> clients as necessary.<br />

Basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples:<br />

Voluntarism – every person has the right to make decisions by him/herself without any<br />

force or violence (to choose if he/she wants to use family plann<strong>in</strong>g); no one has the right<br />

to force a person to use family plann<strong>in</strong>g nor to impose the method to be used.<br />

Informed choice – every person has the right to choose a method based on correct and<br />

adequate <strong>in</strong>formation about all available methods.<br />

Protection aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV –when a person chooses a method, it is important to know<br />

if the method provides any protection aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV.<br />

Diversity – all sett<strong>in</strong>gs/providers must have an adequate number <strong>of</strong> types <strong>of</strong><br />

contraceptive methods to allow the clients to choose methods that are convenient for<br />

them.<br />
