Intrauter<strong>in</strong>e Device (IUD)<br />

Show the woman the IUD and expla<strong>in</strong> that the method is provided by a gynecologist.<br />

How to Use the IUD<br />

• The IUD is <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong>to the uterus and can stay there for up to 10 years.<br />

• Follow-up is not required after the first three to six week checkup (unless there<br />

is a problem or national guidel<strong>in</strong>es specify other protocols).<br />

• After every menstrual period, check to see if str<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>in</strong> place. If they are<br />

miss<strong>in</strong>g, are shorter or are longer, see the medical doctor.<br />

Possible Side Effects<br />

Most women experience no side effects.<br />

Occasionally, they may experience some <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g side effects:<br />

• Cramp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Pa<strong>in</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g and immediately after <strong>in</strong>sertion<br />

• An <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> vag<strong>in</strong>al discharge<br />

• An <strong>in</strong>fection<br />

• Heavier and/or longer periods, which normally decrease dur<strong>in</strong>g the first and<br />

second years.<br />

The IUD Does Not Protect Aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV<br />

To protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV and provide further protection aga<strong>in</strong>st pregnancy, use a<br />

condom dur<strong>in</strong>g every act <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse.<br />

Reasons to Return to Provider<br />

• Abnormal bleed<strong>in</strong>g or discharge*<br />

• Pa<strong>in</strong> (abdom<strong>in</strong>al or pa<strong>in</strong> with <strong>in</strong>tercourse)*<br />

• Fever*<br />

• Period is late or miss<strong>in</strong>g period*<br />

• Str<strong>in</strong>gs are miss<strong>in</strong>g, are shorter, or are longer*<br />

• Anytime there is a problem with the method.<br />

• A re-supply <strong>of</strong> condoms is needed (never run out completely before return<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

• Either partner th<strong>in</strong>ks s/he may have been exposed to a STI*<br />

*Immediately contact health care provider or cl<strong>in</strong>ic if you develop any <strong>of</strong> these<br />

problems.<br />
