SESSION 9: BREASTFEEDING<br />

OBJECTIVES: By the end <strong>of</strong> the session, the participants should be able to:<br />

1. Describe how breast milk is produced<br />

2. Name the benefits <strong>of</strong> breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>fants and for mothers<br />

3. Describe essential pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g (when to beg<strong>in</strong>, frequency, duration,<br />

exclusivity)<br />

4. Identify essential techniques and positions for successful breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

5. Name common problems with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g and what to do <strong>in</strong> case they occur<br />

6. Expla<strong>in</strong> common myths about breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g and the role <strong>of</strong> mediators <strong>in</strong><br />

overcom<strong>in</strong>g these myths.<br />
