Observe the quality <strong>of</strong> their demonstrations. (Do not forget that some <strong>of</strong> them may<br />

directly experience the condom for the first time <strong>in</strong> their lives).<br />

Indicate the page <strong>in</strong> the manual where they can f<strong>in</strong>d the <strong>in</strong>dications for correct use <strong>of</strong><br />

condoms.<br />

Discuss the importance <strong>of</strong> stor<strong>in</strong>g condoms correctly.<br />

Tips for Condom Care:<br />

• Store condoms <strong>in</strong> a cool, dark place. Heat, light, and humidity can damage<br />

condoms. If properly stored, condoms will stay good for about five years.<br />

• Always check the expiration date on the condom package. Do not use condoms<br />

whose expiration date has already passed. Also check the quality <strong>of</strong> the condom:<br />

if it is dry and stiff, do not use it.<br />

• Take care when handl<strong>in</strong>g condoms. F<strong>in</strong>gernails can tear them.<br />

• Do not unroll condoms before us<strong>in</strong>g them. You may weaken them, and an<br />

unrolled condom is difficult to put on.<br />

Ask participants:<br />

‣ What are the advantages and disadvantages <strong>of</strong> condoms?<br />

Note their responses on a flipchart paper, divid<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong>to two columns: advantages<br />

and disadvantages. Review the elements proposed by the participants, <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g additional<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation and corrections if necessary. Use the tra<strong>in</strong>er document Barrier Methods:<br />

Male Condom as a basis for conduct<strong>in</strong>g the discussion.<br />

Ask participants about myths and rumors they have heard about condoms. As one person<br />

mentions a myth or rumor, <strong>in</strong>vite other participants to provide explanations to dispel the<br />

myths/rumors. Ensure that logical explanations are <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong> response to <strong>in</strong>correct<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation, misconceptions, and myths regard<strong>in</strong>g the condom.<br />

Emphasize the importance <strong>of</strong> double protection aga<strong>in</strong>st unwanted pregnancy as well as<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs and stress that the condom is the only method which ensures double<br />

protection.<br />

2. Vag<strong>in</strong>al methods (10 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Make a brief presentation on spermicides (the only vag<strong>in</strong>al method available), us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation from the tra<strong>in</strong>er document Barrier Methods: Vag<strong>in</strong>al methods.<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> the correct use <strong>of</strong> spermicides, which usually are bought directly from<br />

pharmacies and used without any medical <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />

Indicate the page <strong>in</strong> the manual where the vag<strong>in</strong>al methods are described.<br />
