Expla<strong>in</strong> that family plann<strong>in</strong>g means that a person or couple decides freely the number <strong>of</strong><br />

children they want to have and when they want to have them. It is the right <strong>of</strong> a couple to<br />

have children by choice and not by chance.<br />

Review with the group the objectives <strong>of</strong> family plann<strong>in</strong>g, us<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong>er document<br />

Family Plann<strong>in</strong>g as your guide.<br />

Ask participants:<br />

‣ Based on our discussion <strong>of</strong> reproductive health and family plann<strong>in</strong>g, what k<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

<strong>of</strong> health services are related to reproductive health (RH) and family plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(FP)?<br />

After the group has mentioned the services they are aware <strong>of</strong>, use the tra<strong>in</strong>er document<br />

<strong>Reproductive</strong> <strong>Health</strong> / Family Plann<strong>in</strong>g Services to review with the group the types <strong>of</strong><br />

RH/FP services that should be available <strong>in</strong> local health facilities (or by referral).<br />

III.<br />

CLIENTS’ RIGHTS, AND PRINCIPLES OF FAMILY PLANNING<br />

SERVICES (15 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> that when a person asks for/receives any <strong>of</strong> these RH/FP services he/she is not<br />

considered ill or <strong>in</strong>-need for medical assistance and is treated more like a “client”.<br />

Make a short presentation about the client’s rights, us<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong>er document The Rights<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Client <strong>in</strong> a Family Plann<strong>in</strong>g Service.<br />

Briefly expla<strong>in</strong> to the group the basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> FP services and expla<strong>in</strong> to participants<br />

where to f<strong>in</strong>d the Client’s Rights and Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Family Plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Manual.<br />

Emphasize that despite the fact that health mediators are not reproductive health service<br />

providers, they need to respect the same pr<strong>in</strong>ciples as health care providers dur<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

discussions with women about family plann<strong>in</strong>g. Treat<strong>in</strong>g women <strong>in</strong> the community with<br />

respect and giv<strong>in</strong>g them the chance to make decisions is a way <strong>of</strong> encourag<strong>in</strong>g them to<br />

look for services at health sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

BENEFITS OF USING FAMILY PLANNING (40 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Divide participants <strong>in</strong> 4 small groups (depend<strong>in</strong>g on the size <strong>of</strong> the large group). Give to<br />

each group a flipchart paper and a marker and ask them to work together and to write the<br />
