SESSION 14: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION<br />

OBJECTIVES: By the end <strong>of</strong> the session, the participants should be able to:<br />

1. Identify verbal responses that can block communication with women <strong>in</strong> the<br />

community.<br />

2. Identify non-verbal obstacles to communication with women <strong>in</strong> the community.<br />

3. Name conditions that favor positive communication with women <strong>in</strong> the community.<br />

4. Describe behaviors that <strong>in</strong>dicate that one person is actively listen<strong>in</strong>g to another.<br />

5. Def<strong>in</strong>e active listen<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

6. Expla<strong>in</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> active listen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> communication for behavior change.<br />

7. Def<strong>in</strong>e the 3 components <strong>of</strong> active listen<strong>in</strong>g: passive listen<strong>in</strong>g, paraphras<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

clarify<strong>in</strong>g/open questions.<br />

8. Expla<strong>in</strong> factors that <strong>in</strong>fluence what they are will<strong>in</strong>g to reveal about themselves.<br />

9. Expla<strong>in</strong> the application <strong>of</strong> these factors to the behavior <strong>of</strong> women <strong>in</strong> the community<br />

<strong>in</strong> discussions <strong>of</strong> reproductive health.<br />

10. Expla<strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples to respect when respond<strong>in</strong>g to rumors raised by women <strong>in</strong> the<br />

community.<br />

11. Describe approaches to the <strong>in</strong>itiation <strong>of</strong> discussions <strong>of</strong> reproductive health issues<br />

with women <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> situations<br />

12. Demonstrate <strong>in</strong>terpersonal communication skills appropriate to promot<strong>in</strong>g changes<br />

<strong>in</strong> reproductive health behaviors.<br />
