The majority <strong>of</strong> women can use the SDM.<br />

WHO CAN USE SDM?<br />

A woman can use the SDM if:<br />

1. She has regular menstrual cycles between 26 and 32 days long; and<br />

2. She and her partner can avoid unprotected <strong>in</strong>tercourse on days when she can get<br />

pregnant.<br />

This method is appropriate for women who meet the criteria mentioned previously,<br />

EXCEPT:<br />

• Postpartum or breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g women until they have had three menstrual cycles<br />

(i.e. four consecutive periods), and<br />

• Their most recent cycle was between 26 and 32 days long.<br />

Users <strong>of</strong> the 3-month contraceptive <strong>in</strong>jection, until 3 months have passed s<strong>in</strong>ce the last<br />

<strong>in</strong>jection and their most recent cycle was between 26 and 32 days long.<br />

There are no restrictions for us<strong>in</strong>g the SDM among women who recently have used oral<br />

contraceptives, one-month <strong>in</strong>jection, implant, or emergency contraception. These women<br />

can use the SDM if their cycles prior to us<strong>in</strong>g these methods lasted between 26 and 32<br />

days.<br />

Women who recently used an IUD can use the SDM if their cycles while us<strong>in</strong>g the IUD<br />

were between 26 and 32 days long. Use <strong>of</strong> the IUD does not affect cycle length.<br />

Women who recently experienced an abortion or a miscarriage also can use the SDM if<br />

their cycles prior to becom<strong>in</strong>g pregnant lasted between 26 and 32 days.<br />
