The mediator’s eye contact, short responses and jests, and the fact that she did not<br />

<strong>in</strong>terrupt the woman, encouraged the woman to cont<strong>in</strong>ue expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g her problem.<br />

Refer to the second component <strong>of</strong> active listen<strong>in</strong>g; paraphras<strong>in</strong>g. Ask:<br />

‣ What does one do when one paraphrases what a person said?<br />

Reformulates what the person said <strong>in</strong> their own words, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g perception <strong>of</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d the message (expressed by tone <strong>of</strong> voice, facial expression, body language)<br />

‣ What is the purpose <strong>of</strong> paraphras<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

• To verify the mediator's understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> what woman said<br />

• To help the mediator refra<strong>in</strong> from <strong>in</strong>terrupt<strong>in</strong>g the woman and giv<strong>in</strong>g advice<br />

• To encourage the woman to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to expla<strong>in</strong> her problem<br />

Invite participants to observe a demonstration <strong>of</strong> paraphras<strong>in</strong>g (done by 2 tra<strong>in</strong>ers or a<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>er and a participant). One <strong>in</strong>dividual (a tra<strong>in</strong>er or a participant) takes the role <strong>of</strong> a<br />

woman <strong>in</strong> the community and expla<strong>in</strong>s a problem, need or concern. The other <strong>in</strong>dividual (a<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>er) takes the role <strong>of</strong> a mediator, paraphras<strong>in</strong>g what the woman says and encourag<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

woman to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to expla<strong>in</strong> her concern. (2 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Ask the group:<br />

‣ What did the mediator do?<br />

‣ How did paraphras<strong>in</strong>g contribute to communication between the mediator and the<br />

woman?<br />

• The mediator verified that she understood what the woman said (and where she<br />

misunderstood, the woman was able to clarify what she said/meant)<br />

• The mediator encouraged the woman to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to expla<strong>in</strong> her problem<br />

• The mediator did not <strong>in</strong>terrupt the woman with advice nor solutions to her problem<br />

Note: Paraphras<strong>in</strong>g requires that one listen carefully without focus<strong>in</strong>g on other th<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

without be<strong>in</strong>g distracted.<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong> discussions <strong>of</strong> reproductive health, we need to ask women certa<strong>in</strong> questions<br />

<strong>in</strong> order give them appropriate <strong>in</strong>formation. Sometimes, we have the impression that<br />

women do not respond truthfully to the questions we ask. There may be several reasons for<br />
