SESSION 17: FACILITATION OF GROUP EDUCATION SESSIONS<br />

OBJECTIVES: By the end <strong>of</strong> the session, the participants should be able to:<br />

1. Facilitate educational sessions <strong>in</strong> reproductive health, respect<strong>in</strong>g the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong><br />

the preparation <strong>of</strong> sessions and us<strong>in</strong>g group discussion as a method <strong>of</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the educational session.<br />

2. Evaluate <strong>in</strong>formally the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> their educational sessions<br />

TRAINING METHOD: classroom practice<br />

TIME: 2.5 hours<br />

MATERIALS:<br />

INSTRUCTIONS<br />

I-II.<br />

IMPLEMENTATION OF SESSIONS (2.5 hours)<br />

[Note: the time needed for this session will depend upon the number <strong>of</strong> participants <strong>in</strong> the<br />

workshop. The tra<strong>in</strong>ers should plan on approximately 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes for each presentation<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g approximately 2 m<strong>in</strong>utes for each group to organize their materials if needed, 15<br />

m<strong>in</strong>utes maximum for the session, and 10-15 m<strong>in</strong>utes for feedback)].<br />

Ask participants to facilitate their sessions, respect<strong>in</strong>g the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples taught and time limits<br />

(15 m<strong>in</strong>utes).<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the facilitation <strong>of</strong> each session, ask all other participants to:<br />

• Participate as women <strong>in</strong> the community. (The facilitators should <strong>in</strong>dicate the target<br />

population <strong>of</strong> women.)<br />

• Be aware <strong>of</strong> the items on the Checklist for the Facilitation <strong>of</strong> Educational Sessions<br />

(distributed earlier) <strong>in</strong> order to be able to give their colleague (the facilitator)<br />

positive and constructive feedback at the end <strong>of</strong> her session.<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> the each educational session facilitated by a participant, lead a feedback<br />

session. Beg<strong>in</strong> by ask<strong>in</strong>g the facilitator <strong>of</strong> the session to share her impressions <strong>of</strong> the<br />

session (to give her own feedback regard<strong>in</strong>g the session). Then ask other participants to<br />

share their feedback (respect<strong>in</strong>g the rules for giv<strong>in</strong>g positive and constructive feedback).<br />

Facilitate a discussion <strong>of</strong> problems encountered, and any questions participants have about<br />

facilitat<strong>in</strong>g sessions <strong>in</strong> the community.<br />

Validate participants’ experience and rem<strong>in</strong>d them that with experience, they will cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

to improve their skills <strong>in</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g group education sessions.<br />
