o Frequent ur<strong>in</strong>ation. The need to ur<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>of</strong>ten is normal, especially <strong>in</strong> the first<br />

and last months <strong>of</strong> pregnancy (because the grow<strong>in</strong>g uterus presses on the<br />

bladder and leaves less room for it to hold ur<strong>in</strong>e).<br />

• Digestive system<br />

o Nausea (“morn<strong>in</strong>g sickness”) is <strong>of</strong>ten one <strong>of</strong> the first sign <strong>of</strong> pregnancy and is<br />

present especially dur<strong>in</strong>g the 2 nd -3 rd months <strong>of</strong> pregnancy.<br />

The doctor may recommend some <strong>in</strong>terventions for reduc<strong>in</strong>g symptoms.<br />

o Constipation is caused by the uterus push<strong>in</strong>g on the rectum and lower part <strong>of</strong><br />

large <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

o Hemorrhoids (a type <strong>of</strong> swollen ve<strong>in</strong>s around the anus) may burn, hurt or itch;<br />

and may bleed when the woman defecates, especially if she is constipated.<br />

Sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a cool bath, and avoid<strong>in</strong>g constipation by diet modification, can both<br />

help.<br />

o Heartburn is a common symptom, especially <strong>in</strong> the last months <strong>of</strong> pregnancy.<br />

The woman should be <strong>in</strong>formed on lifestyle and diet modification. (See<br />
