SESSION 10: SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS<br />

OBJECTIVES: By the end <strong>of</strong> the session, the participants should be able to:<br />

1. Expla<strong>in</strong> how STIs are transmitted from one person to another<br />

2. Describe how sexually active people can reduce their risk <strong>of</strong> contract<strong>in</strong>g STIs,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g HIV<br />

3. Discuss basic facts about HIV transmission, prevention and test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

TRAINING METHODS: Card game, Discussion, Presentation, Exercise<br />

TIME: 1 hour 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

MATERIALS:<br />

Index Cards (one for each participant)<br />

Papers with words “Myth” and “Truth”<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong>er documents:<br />

• Myths and Truths About HIV/AIDS (statements)<br />

• HIV/AIDS: What is True? What is False? (Sample Discussion Po<strong>in</strong>ts)<br />

Participant documents:<br />

• Ways to Significantly Reduce the Risk <strong>of</strong> Sexually Transmitted Infections<br />

• How Is HIV/AIDS Spread?<br />

INSTRUCTIONS:<br />

I. STI TRANSMISSION (20 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

[Note: The follow<strong>in</strong>g activity is a good icebreaker, at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the session, to get<br />

the group <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong> STIs/HIV.]<br />

Prepare <strong>in</strong>dex cards so that one <strong>in</strong>dex card has a small letter h, one card has a small letter<br />

g, one card has a small letter c, and one card says “Do not accept signatures.” The rest <strong>of</strong><br />

the cards are blank.<br />

Inform participants that they will play a game.<br />

Exercise <strong>in</strong>structions:<br />

1. Give each participant an <strong>in</strong>dex card. A few <strong>of</strong> the cards will be slightly different. (One<br />

card has the letter h, one card has the letter g, and one card has the letter c, and one card<br />

says “Do not shake hands with anyone.” The rest <strong>of</strong> the cards are blank.). Do not tell<br />

participants that a few <strong>of</strong> the cards will be slightly different.<br />

2. Quietly rem<strong>in</strong>d the person with the card that says “Do not shake hands with anyone” to<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dly refra<strong>in</strong> from shak<strong>in</strong>g hands dur<strong>in</strong>g the exercise. Then, <strong>in</strong> a loud voice, ask<br />

participants to stand and move about the room and shake hands with three different<br />

people <strong>in</strong> various parts <strong>of</strong> the room.<br />
