‣ How do you feel about ask<strong>in</strong>g women about their reproductive health needs and/or<br />

concerns without their request<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation or services?<br />

Some mediators may feel reluctant to <strong>in</strong>itiate discussions <strong>of</strong> women’s reproductive health<br />

needs, th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that it would be an <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> a woman’s privacy, and that women would be<br />

embarrassed or <strong>of</strong>fended.<br />

‣ How can you overcome your reluctance and/or respond to a woman’s embarrassment if it<br />

occurs?<br />

Clarify with the woman, or with women <strong>in</strong> a group situation, that your purpose is only to assist<br />

her/them to consider needs and concerns, and to obta<strong>in</strong> services if desired, and that the choice is<br />

hers/theirs; and that you are available to help with <strong>in</strong>formation and/or to obta<strong>in</strong> services if<br />

needed.<br />

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE HUMAN BEHAVIOR (20 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Tell a story about a woman and the decisions she faced concern<strong>in</strong>g her reproductive health and her<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g services. (see tra<strong>in</strong>er document: Story: Factors That Influence Human Behavior)<br />

In the large group, ask participants to identify factors that <strong>in</strong>fluenced the woman’s behavior and<br />

choices. As participants name various factors, draw a flower (with four petals labeled cultural,<br />

social, perception and enabl<strong>in</strong>g) on a flip chart and fill <strong>in</strong> the petals with the factors, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

four categories.<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong> order to assist <strong>in</strong>dividuals to change certa<strong>in</strong> behaviors and/or to seek certa<strong>in</strong><br />

reproductive health services, we need to understand what k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs might <strong>in</strong>fluence their<br />

behavior:<br />

• Cultural factors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Customs with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Roma</strong> community<br />

Traditions that are passed down from parents to children<br />

Religious beliefs<br />

• Social factors: <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>of</strong> other people (spouse, parents/relatives, friends, religious<br />

leaders)<br />

• People’s perception (their understand<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> messages). A person’s<br />

perception is <strong>in</strong>fluenced by:<br />

o Their understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> language and term<strong>in</strong>ology used<br />

o Their understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> any visual aids used to expla<strong>in</strong> the message<br />

o The quantity <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation given<br />
