INTRA-UTERINE DEVICE (presentation)<br />

The IUD is a small plastic device (which may conta<strong>in</strong> copper or progesterone hormone)<br />

that is placed <strong>in</strong> the uterus <strong>of</strong> a non-pregnant woman, where it acts as an effective, longterm,<br />

but reversible contraceptive.<br />

The most commonly used IUD is a Copper T. The Copper T looks like the letter “T. The<br />

stem <strong>of</strong> “T” is wound with copper wire. Effective life <strong>of</strong> the Copper-T 380 is ten years,<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g that once <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong> the women’s uterus, it can prevent pregnancy for ten years.<br />

Two th<strong>in</strong> nylon threads /str<strong>in</strong>gs are attached to its lower end and lie <strong>in</strong> the vag<strong>in</strong>a. The<br />

threads are used <strong>in</strong> check<strong>in</strong>g the IUD and <strong>in</strong> its removal.<br />

How it Works<br />

• The IUD prevents sperm from reach<strong>in</strong>g the ovum as copper decreases their mobility.<br />

• It prevents the eggs from be<strong>in</strong>g fertilized.<br />

Effectiveness<br />

The IUD is high effective: only 1 pregnancy <strong>in</strong> 125 women us<strong>in</strong>g the IUD <strong>in</strong> the first year<br />

Advantages<br />

• Is a safe, effective, long last<strong>in</strong>g method (up to 10 years)<br />

• Is easy to use (once it is <strong>in</strong>serted, the woman has noth<strong>in</strong>g else to do or to remember,<br />

except check<strong>in</strong>g the str<strong>in</strong>gs regularly)<br />

• Can be removed at any time by a tra<strong>in</strong>ed health provider, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the woman’s<br />

wishes or for medical reasons<br />

• Immediate return to fertility upon removal<br />

• Does not <strong>in</strong>terfere with sexual <strong>in</strong>tercourse<br />

• Does not affect breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Has no <strong>in</strong>teraction with medic<strong>in</strong>es the woman may be tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• After the <strong>in</strong>itial follow-up visit, the woman needs to return to cl<strong>in</strong>ic only if there are<br />

any problems<br />

• No supplies needed by the woman.<br />

Disadvantages/Limitations<br />

• May have some side effects<br />

• Must be <strong>in</strong>serted and removed by a tra<strong>in</strong>ed health pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

• Pelvic exam<strong>in</strong>ation required and screen<strong>in</strong>g for RTIs/STIs recommended before<br />

<strong>in</strong>sertion<br />

• May <strong>in</strong>duce changes <strong>in</strong> menstrual cycle pattern (Cooper IUDs)<br />

• Women us<strong>in</strong>g IUDs need to check the str<strong>in</strong>gs regularly<br />

• Does not protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g AIDS (<strong>in</strong> fact it <strong>in</strong>creases the risk <strong>of</strong> STIs <strong>in</strong><br />

women with multiple partners or whose only constant partner has multiple sexual<br />

partners)<br />
