Correct Use <strong>of</strong> Condom<br />

• Check the manufacture date and the expiry date on the package when you buy<br />

condoms.<br />

• Use a new condom every time, with every act <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse.<br />

• Open the condom package<br />

• Carefully remove the condom from the package<br />

• Before the penis touches the partner, place the condom on the erect penis or have<br />

the partner do it.<br />

o Hold the condom with the rolled side up<br />

o Pull the foresk<strong>in</strong> back<br />

o P<strong>in</strong>ch the tip <strong>of</strong> the condom <strong>in</strong> order to leave a half centimeter <strong>of</strong> empty<br />

space at the tip <strong>of</strong> the condom<br />

o Put the unrolled condom on the tip <strong>of</strong> the penis<br />

o Completely unroll the condom all the way to the base <strong>of</strong> the penis<br />

• If you want additional lubrication, contraceptive foam or spit may be used. Do<br />

not use petroleum jelly or other oils as they can cause deterioration <strong>of</strong> the rubber.<br />

• Sexual <strong>in</strong>tercourse<br />

• After ejaculation, hold the condom rim to the base <strong>of</strong> the penis so it will not slip<br />

<strong>of</strong>f<br />

• Withdraw the penis as soon as possible, because if the erection is lost, the condom<br />

can slip <strong>of</strong>f and semen can spill <strong>in</strong>to the vag<strong>in</strong>a<br />

• Bend the penis and carefully remove the condom<br />

• Tie a knot at the end <strong>of</strong> the condom<br />

• Throw the condom <strong>in</strong> the garbage can (avoid throw<strong>in</strong>g the condom <strong>in</strong> the toilet,<br />

where the condom floats); do not throw it <strong>in</strong> places that can easily be reached by<br />

children who can play with it, expos<strong>in</strong>g themselves to <strong>in</strong>fection risks.<br />

If the condom breaks:<br />

• A spermicide may be immediately applied <strong>in</strong> the vag<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

• Wash<strong>in</strong>g the vag<strong>in</strong>a and the penis with water and soap will reduce the risks <strong>of</strong> STI<br />

occurrence.<br />

• In order to prevent pregnancy, the woman may request emergency contraception.<br />

Tips for Condom Care:<br />

• Store condoms <strong>in</strong> a cool, dark place, protected from sunlight. Heat, light, and<br />

humidity can damage condoms. If properly stored, condoms will stay good for<br />

about five years.<br />

• If the package is damaged, do not use the condom.<br />

• Take care when handl<strong>in</strong>g condoms. F<strong>in</strong>gernails can tear them.<br />

• Do not unroll condoms before us<strong>in</strong>g them. You may weaken them, and an<br />

unrolled condom is difficult to put on.<br />
