Distribute the handout Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g. Ask volunteers to read the<br />

statements.<br />

Ask participants:<br />

‣ In your communities, are these pr<strong>in</strong>ciples generally applied?<br />

The answers will vary.<br />

‣ What can you do to encourage more mothers to follow these pr<strong>in</strong>ciples?<br />

• Inform/Educate mothers about:<br />

o The benefits <strong>of</strong> breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

o The pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g (when to beg<strong>in</strong>, frequency, duration, exclusivity)<br />

o Techniques and positions for breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

o How to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> lactation<br />

o How to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> proper hygiene <strong>of</strong> the breasts<br />

o How to resolve common problems <strong>of</strong> breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Correct mis<strong>in</strong>formation and myths encountered <strong>in</strong> the community<br />
