15. Cont<strong>in</strong>ue to ask open questions <strong>in</strong> relationship to the topic <strong>in</strong> order to encourage<br />

everyone to participate.<br />

16. Encourage people to listen to the person who is talk<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

17. Follow the discussion closely. Do not let it deviate from the subject. If important<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts are not mentioned, mention them yourself.<br />

18. Keep discussions short (15 - 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes maximum) and leave people wish<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

more. After an hour or so, people become bored and lose <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

19. Practice with colleagues, family or friends until you ga<strong>in</strong> experience and confidence.<br />

Ask them questions you plan to ask the group to f<strong>in</strong>d out what their response is.<br />

Summary<br />

1. Ask members <strong>of</strong> the group to resume the important po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> the discussion.<br />

2. Ask group members what they learned dur<strong>in</strong>g the session that is relevant to them<br />

and/or can help them.<br />

3. Suggest that group members cont<strong>in</strong>ue to discuss the subject with family and friends<br />

later. If the message had mean<strong>in</strong>g to them, encourage them to act on it.<br />

Evaluation<br />

Evaluate the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the session by your observations <strong>of</strong> the level <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest,<br />

questions asked and answers given by participants; and by subsequent <strong>in</strong>terest and requests<br />

for additional <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />
