Emergency Contraception Pills (ECPs)<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> the woman that ECPs are provided by health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

How to Use ECPs<br />

• Swallow the tablets provided bz health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals as soon as possible after<br />

unprotected sex. Do not delay treatment unnecessarily as effectiveness<br />

decreases over time.<br />

• Swallow the second dose 12 hours after the first dose.<br />

• Important: ECPs can be used for up to five days (120 hours) after the<br />

occurrence <strong>of</strong> unprotected sex.<br />

• If vomit<strong>in</strong>g occurs with<strong>in</strong> one hour after either dose, repeat the dose. If<br />

vomit<strong>in</strong>g is severe, go to the doctor.<br />

• To reduce nausea, take the tablets after eat<strong>in</strong>g or before go<strong>in</strong>g to bed.<br />

Possible Side Effects<br />

Most women experience no side effects.<br />

Occasionally, they may experience the follow<strong>in</strong>g side effects:<br />

• Nausea<br />

• Vomit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Headaches or dizz<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

• Cramp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Breast tenderness<br />

Side effects generally do not last for more than 24 hours.<br />

What to Expect After Us<strong>in</strong>g ECPs<br />

There will not be any immediate signs show<strong>in</strong>g whether the ECPs worked.<br />

The menstrual period should come on time (or a few days early or late).<br />

Reasons to Return to Provider<br />

• Period is more than a week later than expected.<br />

• Any other cause for concern.<br />

Encourage the woman to visit a family plann<strong>in</strong>g provider who will <strong>of</strong>fer her<br />

contraceptive counsell<strong>in</strong>g and, if she chooses, a method <strong>of</strong> contraception. Expla<strong>in</strong> that<br />

condoms must also be used with the method, <strong>in</strong> order to protect aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs/HIV.<br />
