• The message must target the beliefs which have the most <strong>in</strong>fluence on the<br />

person's attitude toward the proposed behavior change<br />

• The person must be able to overcome any oppos<strong>in</strong>g pressures from family or<br />

others important to him/her<br />

• Enabl<strong>in</strong>g factors (money, time, skills, health services etc) must be adequate to<br />

facilitate the change<br />

Behaviors be<strong>in</strong>g promoted must lead to health improvements.<br />

Distribute the participant document Cont<strong>in</strong>uum <strong>in</strong> the Effectiveness <strong>of</strong> Educational<br />

Activities.<br />

II.<br />

STEPS IN PLANNING GROUP EDUCATION SESSIONS (20 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

Ask participants:<br />

‣ Where on the cont<strong>in</strong>uum that we just discussed are your objectives for educational<br />

sessions you will be do<strong>in</strong>g with women <strong>in</strong> your communities?<br />

That you reach your <strong>in</strong>tended audience?<br />

That women listen and participate <strong>in</strong> your sessions?<br />

That women understand your messages?<br />

That women believe and accept your messages?<br />

That women change their behavior as a result <strong>of</strong> participation <strong>in</strong> your sessions?<br />

That women’s health improves as a result <strong>of</strong> their behavior change?<br />

Note: It is assumed that the mediators’ objectives are to help women change certa<strong>in</strong><br />

behaviors which will lead to improvement <strong>in</strong> their health and <strong>in</strong> the health <strong>of</strong> their children<br />

‣ What do you need to do to prepare an effective session (one which meets your<br />

objectives)?<br />

Introduce a practical structure for plann<strong>in</strong>g educational sessions, based on the follow<strong>in</strong>g six<br />

questions.<br />

1. Who is my public/target group? What k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> group am I go<strong>in</strong>g to speak with?<br />

• What do they already know about the subject?<br />

• What expectations/<strong>in</strong>terests might they have on the chosen subject?<br />
