Below are two lists: 1) contraceptive methods, and 2) characteristics <strong>of</strong> contraceptive<br />

methods. Read the characteristics “a” through “j”. For each item, identify the method <strong>of</strong><br />

contraception to which it applies. Put the letter <strong>of</strong> the item (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, or j) <strong>in</strong><br />

the space next to the contraceptive method to which it applies. Note that each item may<br />

Characteristics <strong>of</strong> contraceptive methods:<br />

a. Can only be used by breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g mothers under certa<strong>in</strong> conditions<br />

b. Effectiveness is low as the method is commonly used<br />

c. Provides protection aga<strong>in</strong>st STIs & HIV/AIDS to both partners<br />

d. Destroys sperm so that they cannot reach the egg/ovum to fertilize it<br />

e. Often causes irregular menstrual periods or absence <strong>of</strong> periods<br />

f. The method <strong>in</strong>volves block<strong>in</strong>g the fallopian tubes (<strong>in</strong> a woman) or the vas<br />

deferens (<strong>in</strong> a man)<br />

g. Often leads to lighter, regular periods with less cramp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

h. It usually takes 6-10 months to become pregnant after stopp<strong>in</strong>g the method<br />

i. The method should not be used on a regular basis<br />

j. Is a safe, effective, long last<strong>in</strong>g method (up to 10 years)<br />
