Cluster 7: Italy, SpainAs can be understood from the clusters above, there is a clear distinction between the developingeconomies and countries such as Germany, UK and France which fall in two separate - but close -clusters. Another cluster is made of the Mediterranean countries: Malta, Portugal, Cyprus and Greece, with Italy and Spain very close as well.In the case of the Environmental Dimension, the clusters obtained are the following:Cluster 1: Estonia, Greece, Czech Republic, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Belgium, Italy, SwedenCluster 2: Hungary, Lithuania, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, MaltaCluster 3: Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, LatviaCluster 4: Cyprus, IrelandCluster 5: Denmark, Finland, AustriaOutlier: LuxembourgIn this dimension the clusters appear more varied than in the social dimension. The distinctionbetween developing economies and richer countries is not that clear anymore in the clusters. This isespecially evident in Cluster 1 and 2, which group countries very different among themselves.Luxembourg is completely separated from all the other countries and remains an outlier until the lastiteration. For the Economic Dimension the clusters are the following:Cluster 1: Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Hungary, SlovakiaCluster 2: Cyprus, Portugal, Greece, Italy, MaltaCluster 3: Czech Republic, Slovenia, Ireland, SpainCluster 4: Austria, Germany, France, BelgiumCluster 5: Netherlands, United Kingdom, Finland, SwedenOutliers: Denmark, LuxembourgIn the case of the Economic Dimension, it appears that the developing economies end up mostly inCluster 1, Mediterranean countries in Cluster 2 and the bigger economies in Cluster 4 and Cluster 5.Luxembourg is again an outlier, together with Denmark. It is important to note that each dimension presents a different set of groups, so there is no evidentcohesion in the grouping of the countries for the three thematic areas. This underlines how important itis to keep this distinction when analyzing sustainability at the national level, as it cannot be assumedthat the behavior in one dimension will be replicated in the other two as well.3.2. Ranking resultsIn this chapter the ranking results are presented for each dimension and for the years 1997 and 2005.15
