BIOREFINERY IMPLEMENTATION IN MARGINAL LAND-A FOCUS ON THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL USE OFREGIONAL AGRICULTURE.Sandra Fahd, Gabriella Fiorentino1, Salvatore Mellino, Maddalena Ripa andSergio UlgiatiDepartment of Sciences for the Environment, Parthenope University of Naples, ItalyABSTRACT In times of depletion of fossil resources and increasing environmental concerns, morefocus needs to be placed on energy and materials co-production patterns. The search for new sourcesof energy is often leading to intensified use of available land for energy cropping in competition withfood production, although recent studies show that land conversion from forest, savannah andgrassland into biofuels crops causes significant increases of CO 2 emissions. Within the EU fundedSMILE project, an alternative design for marginal land use in central-southern Italy was hypothesizedby assuming marginal lands to be cropped with Brassica carinata, a non-food crop, for biodieselproduction from seeds and, at the same time, biochemicals extraction from residues. The actualpotential of the biorefinery concept applied to marginal or abandoned lands was deeply investigated.The effectiveness of an expanded LCA approach, named SUMMA (SUstainability MultimethodMultiscale Assessment), based on the consistent application of different assessment methods to theinput and output inventory of local processes, was tested by means of the comparison of two differentscenarios (bioenergy approach versus biorefinery approach). A further integration within the SUMMAmethod consisted in a specific spatial parameterisation by means of Geographic Information System(GIS) procedures. Results achieved show that the energy and environmental performance of biodieseland heat generation from Brassica residues is unlikely to be profitable and desirable at the level ofCampania regional agriculture, due to the fact that the economic cost of the whole process largelyexceeds the value of the saved fossil fuels. If straw and oilseed cake meals are accounted for, inaddition to the biodiesel production, the performance results to be higher from an energetic point ofview, but the process is still not fully satisfactory in economic and environmental terms. Instead, ifagricultural residues are exploited for the extraction of chemical building blocks, through the so-calledBiofine process or other biorefinery patterns, the performance is improved, thanks to the high addedvalue of generated biochemicals.1Corresponding Author.
