ChinaThe primary energy sources in China are shown in Fig. 14. The importance of coal use can easily be seenfrom the figure. The increasing use of coal has had a distinct impact on the CO 2 emissions as well as theincreasing use of oil especially in the transport sector. It seems that until 2007 there has not been muchincrease in the use of renewable energy.2500Primary energy sources in China (Mtoe)200015001000500Combustible renewablesHydroNuclearNatural gasPetroleum productsCrude oilCoal and coal products01971 1980 1990 2000 2007Figure 14. Primary energy supply in China. Data source (IEA 2009).The results of the decomposition analysis of factors contributing to the CO2 emissions is shown inFig. 15. Again here the percentage figures are remarkably large due to the very low starting level ofemissions in the year 1971, which serves as the reference value. The shift to fossil fuel dominated energysystem can be seen in the factor CO 2 /TPES. Also the shift to increased electricity share of final energyconsumption is observable in the component TPES/FEC: On the one hand, the energy intensity of theChinese production system has decreased considerably contributing to the reduction of emissions but onthe other hand, the huge economic growth and population growth have contributed in increasing theemissions.483
