On 18 January 1982 theFARL shot dead the U.S. Army attaché to Paris, Lieutenant ColonelCharles Ray, and on 24 March 1984 shot and wounded Robert OnanHomme, U.S. consul general in Strasbourg. On 3 April 1982 theFARL machine-gunned to death Yacov Barsimentov, an Israeli diplomatin Paris alleged by the FARL to have been a Mossad agent. Latera police raid on a Direct Action hideout revealed the Sten gun used inthis and other FARL attacks. On 15 February 1984 the FARL claimedcredit for the murder in Rome <strong>of</strong> a U.S. citizen, Leamon Hunt, the director<strong>of</strong> the multinational observer force in the Sinai. While the RedBrigades also claimed credit for killing Hunt, it appears that the FARLcollaborated with the Red Brigades in this action.The capture <strong>of</strong> Georges Ibrahim Abdallah in 1984 led to a hiatusin FARL activities, except for the kidnapping and murder <strong>of</strong> aFrenchman in Lebanon and a series <strong>of</strong> threats against the Frenchgovernment if Abdallah were not released. During September 1986the FARL fulfilled some <strong>of</strong> its threats by carrying out a bombingcampaign in Paris, in which the Armenian Secret Army for theLiberation <strong>of</strong> Armenia (ASALA) and some pro-Iranian elementsmay have participated, killing 15 people and injuring more than150 others. Nonetheless, French courts sentenced Abdullah to lifeimprisonment in 1987 for the murder <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant Colonel Ray andon other charges. Most <strong>of</strong> the FARL’s members returned to Lebanonthat year and have been relatively inactive since then.In March 2002 Abdallah’s appeal for parole was rejected. In November2003 he sought and was granted conditional release on parolein the jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department insouthern France. However, on 15 January 2004, Minister <strong>of</strong> JusticeDominique Perben appealed and overturned the granted parole andcurrently Abdallah remains imprisoned in the main penitentiary inLannemezan in the Hautes-Pyrénées Department.
