Alyson J. K. Bailes (United Kingdom) is<strong>the</strong> Director of SIPRI. Her research interests are insecurity <strong>and</strong> defence cooperation in WesternEurope, including <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> Union <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> North Atlantic Treaty Organization, inparticular France, Germany <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> UnitedKingdom, but also including <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nordic</strong>countries. He is <strong>the</strong> foundingDirector of <strong>the</strong> National Centre for CrisisManagement Research <strong>and</strong> Training(CRISMART) of <strong>the</strong> Swedish National<strong>Defence</strong> College. He has been Director of <strong>the</strong>International Graduate School of StockholmUniversity, Head of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Security</strong> <strong>and</strong> Foreign<strong>Policy</strong> Research Programme of <strong>the</strong> SwedishInstitute of International Affairs <strong>and</strong> Directorof Research at <strong>the</strong> Swedish National <strong>Defence</strong>Research Establishment.
