She was previously <strong>the</strong> Director of <strong>the</strong> Copenhagen PeaceResearch Institute <strong>and</strong> an associate professor at <strong>the</strong> Danish Technical University,where she was in charge of a research programme on military technology<strong>and</strong> its conversion potential after <strong>the</strong> cold war. As <strong>the</strong> former director of<strong>the</strong> Regional Council of North Karelia in Finl<strong>and</strong>, she has written extensivelyon border issues <strong>and</strong> cross-border cooperation. She holdsa PhD from Johns Hopkins University SAIS. She is a regular commentator onissues of foreign <strong>and</strong> security policy in Danish electronic <strong>and</strong> printed media.Lars van Dassen (Denmark) is <strong>the</strong> Deputy Head of <strong>the</strong> International CooperationProgramme of <strong>the</strong> Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, where he hasresponsibility for cooperation with <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth of Independent States in<strong>the</strong> field of nuclear proliferation. In 1996–2001 he was a PhD c<strong>and</strong>idate <strong>and</strong>programme director at <strong>the</strong> Department of Peace <strong>and</strong> Conflict Research, UppsalaUniversity, <strong>and</strong> in 1994–96 he was a research fellow at <strong>the</strong> Peace ResearchInstitute, Frankfurt. Maerli).Magnus Ekengren (Sweden) is a senior lecturer <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Director of <strong>European</strong><strong>Security</strong> Studies at <strong>the</strong> Swedish National <strong>Defence</strong> College. He was previously<strong>the</strong> Deputy Director of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> Planning Unit of <strong>the</strong> Swedish Ministry forForeign Affairs. His main research interests are in <strong>the</strong> fields of <strong>European</strong> foreign<strong>and</strong> security policy <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong>ization of <strong>the</strong> nation state.
