—SYLLOGISM OF THE PAPACY. 97poral, and, by consequence, the two jurisdictions, that themoment Rome attempts to cut in twain what her logic joinsin one, she ceases to be the popedom. Her syllogism is indestructibleif the minor proposition be but granted ; andthe minor proposition, be it remembered, is her fundamentalaxiom Christ :is the Vicar of God, and, as such, possessesHIS power ; BUT THE PoPE IS THE ViCAR OF ClIRIST ;THEREFORE THE POPE IS God'S YiCAR, AND POSSESSES HISPOWER. To Christ, as the Vicar of God, all power, spiritualand temporal, has been delegated. All spiritual power hasbeen delegated to Him as Head of the Church ;and all temporalpower has been delegated to Him for the good of theChurch. To talk of the popedomwielding a purely spiritual authority only, is to assert whather fundamental principles repudiate. These principlescompel her to claim the temporal also. The two authoritiesgrow out of the same fundamental axiom, and are sowoven together inthe system, and so indissolubly knit theone to the other, that the Papacy must part with both ornone. The popedom, then, stands alone. In genius, in constitution, and in prerogative, it is diverse from all other societies. The Church of Rome is a temporal monarchy asreally as she is an ecclesiastic body ; and in token of herhybrid character, her head, the Pope, displays the emblemsof both jurisdictions,—the keys in the one hand, the swordin the other,H
