OF PURGATORY. 347CHAPTER XVI.OF PURGATORY.Papists have mapped out the other world into four granddivisions. The lowest is hell, the region of the damned.There are the ever-burning fires ; there are Lutherans, andall other Protestant heretics ; and, in fine, there are all whohave died beyond the pale of the Roman Catholic Church,with the exception of a few heathens, and a few Christianswhose narrow intellects scarcely sei'ved to distinguish betweentheir right hand and their left, and who have escapedon the ground of " invincible ignorance.'" The next regionin order is purgatory, of which we shall have occasion tospeak more fully immediately. Immediately above purgatoryis limhus patriim, where the souls of the saints wljodied before our Saviour\s time were confined, till releasedby Him, and carried with Him to heaven at his ascension,when this region was abolished, and heaven substituted inits room. The last and remaining region is linibus infantum.To this receptacle the souls of children dying unbaptized areconsigned ; it being a settled point among the doctors ofthe Romish Church, that such as die unbaptized are excludedfrom heaven.It is the lowest save one of these four localitieswe are to speak, —purgatory.of whichIt is filled with the same fires,
