It was the Jesu<strong>its</strong> who plotted the dreadfulmassacres in Sicily, who have filledthe dungeons of Napleswith thous<strong>and</strong>s of innocent citizens, who drove into exileevery Roman favourable to liberty <strong>and</strong> opposed to the Pope,who closed the clubs <strong>and</strong> fettered the press of France,Tuscany, Germany, <strong>and</strong> Austria; <strong>and</strong>, in fine, it was theJesu<strong>its</strong> of Vienna who crushed thenationalities <strong>and</strong> counselledthe judicial murders of Hungary. History will layall this blood to the door of the Papacy. It has all beenshed in pursuance of a plan concocted by the Church,—nowunder the government of Jesuitism,—to recover her formerascendancy. <strong>The</strong> common danger which in the late revolutionthreatened both Church <strong>and</strong> State, has made the twocling closely together. " I alone,"—so, in effect, said theChurch to the State,— " can save you. In me, <strong>and</strong> nowhereelse, are to be found the principles of order <strong>and</strong> the centreof union. <strong>The</strong> spiritual weapons which it is mine to wieldare alone able to combat <strong>and</strong> subdue the infidel <strong>and</strong> atheisticprinciples which have produced the revolution. Lend meyour aid now, <strong>and</strong> promise me your submission in time tocome, <strong>and</strong> I will reduce the masses to your authority."Thisreasoning was omnipotent, <strong>and</strong> the bargain was struck.Accordingly there is not a court of Catholic Europe Mherethe Jesuit influence is not at this moment supreme. Andit ishappening at present, as it has happened at all formerperiods of confusion, that in proportion as the State losesthe Church acquires strength.
