If asked what is the firstmean to regenerate Italy, we answer, the Bible ; if askedwhat is the second, we answer, the Bible ; if asked what isthe third, we answer, the Bible. God is plainly announcingby his providence that He will overthrow the Papacy, regenerateItaly, and save the world, by his Word, to the exclusionof all else. No missionary could enter Italy at thismoment ; but the Bible will, can, and has entered Italy, andeven Home. There are two doors by which we can sendthe Bible into Italy at present. We can convey it by theSimplon, the great highway from Switzerland into Italy.Covering this entrance, as it were, we have the WaldensianChurch, ready and eager to assist us in this good work.Besides,the Austrian sway in Lombardy is milder than thesacerdotal government in the States of the Church ; and inLombardy and the adjoining parts of Italy it is quite practicableat this moment to distribute Bibles by colporteurs.The other door is of course on the west. There are threefree ports on that side of Italy,—Genoa, Leghorn, and CivitaVecchia. Let Bibles be conveyed thither.
