But this isnot the worst of it. <strong>The</strong> system has been converted intoa code. It exists, not as a body of maxims or principles,though in thatshape <strong>its</strong> influence would have been greatit exists as a body of laws, by which every Eomish ecclesiasticis bound to act, <strong>and</strong> which he is appointed to administer.This is termed Canon Law. <strong>The</strong> canon law is the slowgrowth of a multitude of ages.It reminds us of those coralisl<strong>and</strong>s in the great Pacific, the terror of the mariner, whichmyriads <strong>and</strong> myriads of insects laboured to raise from the bottomto the surface of the ocean. One race of these little builderstook up the work where another race had left it; <strong>and</strong> thusthe mass grew unseen in the dark <strong>and</strong> sullen deep, whethercalm or storm prevailed on the surface. In like fashion,monks <strong>and</strong> popes innumerable, working in the depth of thedark ages, with the ceaseless <strong>and</strong> noiseless diligence, thoughnot quite so innocently as the little artificers to whom wehave referred, produced at last the hideous formation knownas the canon law.This code, then, is not the product of onelarge mind, like the Code Justinian or the Code Napoleon,
