JESUIT TACTICS IN AUSTRIA. 5 1 7abridged, those of the Church of Rome have been fully restored. The placetum reglmn has been abolished, and thePope now exercises in Austria uncontrolled power in theappointment of bishops. An association has been formedby the machinations of the Jesuits, called " The Young CatholicAssociation •" its recruits are drawn mainly from theyouth in the schools. Every member, on entering, mustswear fidelity to the Pope, and promise to concur in the establishmentof missionsthroughout Austria, and in the realizationof religious liberty,—a phrase which can mean onlya right to extirpate Protestantism, seeing the Romanistsalready enjoy full liberty in Austria. During the summerof 1850, Jesuit intrigue had well-nigh precipitated Austriain sanguinary conflict upon Prussia, War was averted onlyby the concessions and humiliations of the King of Prussiaat Olmutz,Protestant congregations in Hungary have beensadly harassed ; and it was universally observed, that duringthe negotiations of 1850, the troops of Austria werequartered exclusively in protestant districts, after the approvedmodes of punishing nonconformity setby FerdinandII. at the beginning of the " thirty years'* war," and by ourown Charles II. during the " twenty-eight years'* persecution.''''*And now the house of Hapsburg has fully returnedto its traditionary maxims of rule, and has completed its reactionby its edict, in August of this year (1851), proclaimingthe will of the Emperor the sole constitution of the country, and rendering the cabinet and the council of stateaccountableto the Emperor alone. Thus the last shred ofconstitutionalism has been swept away, and the naked fabricof pure unmitigateddespotism has been set up in its room.* While we write, a proof has transpired of the intimate relations betwixtthe priests and the governments, and the efforts which the formerare prepared to make to maintain the latter. Austria has offered for aloan of eighty-five million francs. The loan has been subscribed for notat all in England ;partially in Germany ; more generally, though notquite voluntarily, in Austria. But mark ! the Romish bishops have agreedto subscribe to the whole extent of the available means of the convents.
