By an inevitable consequence,the Papacy must retrograde as the world advances.<strong>The</strong> diffusion of letters, the growth of free institutions,above all, the prevalence of true religion, are hateful to thePapacy ; they threaten <strong>its</strong> vei-y existence, <strong>and</strong> necessarilyrouse into violent action all <strong>its</strong> more intolerant qualities. <strong>The</strong>most cursory survey of <strong>its</strong><strong>history</strong> for the past six centuriesabundantly attests the truth of what we now say. It wasnot till arts <strong>and</strong> Christianity began to enlighten southernEurope in the twelfth century, that Rome unsheathed thesword. <strong>The</strong> Reformation came next, <strong>and</strong> was followed bya new outburst of ferocity <strong>and</strong> tyranny on the part of Rome.Thus, as the world grows better, the Papacy grows worse.<strong>The</strong> Papacy of the present day, so far from being set off bya comparison with the Papacy of the middle ages, rathersuffers thereby ; for of the two, the latter certainly was themore tolerant in <strong>its</strong> actings.
