1 70 SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION.CHAPTER 11.SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION.Papists concur with Protestants inadmitting that God isthe source of all obligation <strong>and</strong> duty, <strong>and</strong> that the Biblecontains a revelation of his will. But while the Papist adm<strong>its</strong>that the Bible is a revelation of the will of God, he is farfrom admitting, with the Protestant, that it is the only revelation.He holds, on the contrary, that it is neither asufficient rule of faith, nor the only rule; but that tradition,which he terms the ummntten word, is equally inspired <strong>and</strong>equally authoritative with the Bible. To tradition, then,the Papist assigns an equal rank with the Scriptures as adivine revelation. <strong>The</strong> Council of Trent, in <strong>its</strong> fourth session,decreed, " that all should receive with equal reverencethe books of the Old <strong>and</strong> New Testament, <strong>and</strong> the traditionsconcerning faith <strong>and</strong> manners, as proceeding from themouth of Christ, or inspired by the Holy Spirit, <strong>and</strong> preservedin the Catholic Church ; <strong>and</strong> that whosoever knowingly,<strong>and</strong> of deliberate purpose, despisedbe anathema."*traditions, shouldIn the creed of the Council of Trent is thefollowing article:— "I do most firmly receive <strong>and</strong> embracethe apostolical <strong>and</strong> ecclesiastical traditions, <strong>and</strong> otherusages, of the Roman Church."
