}—;JESUIT OPERATIONS IN ENGLAND. 527Catholics <strong>and</strong> Jesu<strong>its</strong> into tlio British senate,—wc need notdescribe. <strong>The</strong> principal scene of operations was now transferredby the Jesu<strong>its</strong> to Engl<strong>and</strong>.<strong>The</strong> Jesu<strong>its</strong> have a sort of intuitive sagacity in comprehendingin what lies the strength of an enemy, <strong>and</strong> of coursethe point to attack. <strong>The</strong> Church of Engl<strong>and</strong>, they saw, wasthe main barrier between them <strong>and</strong> political ascendancy.Provided they could Romanize it, the battle would be halfwon ; <strong>and</strong> to carry this point all their efforts were put forth.But previous to beginning operations on the Anglican Establishment,there was a preliminary point tothe reduction of the old popish families tobe gained,the Jesuit dominion.To effect this, the college at Stoneyhurst was erected.This institution is flourishing, <strong>and</strong> nearly all the firstCatholic families in Engl<strong>and</strong> are educated within <strong>its</strong> walls<strong>and</strong> there they receive such a polish as is fitted to makethem influential in English society. But the main battlewas directed against the Church of Engl<strong>and</strong>. <strong>The</strong>y stroveto quicken the dormant principles of a popish origin whichhad been suffered to remain in her ever since the Eeformation; they availed themselves of her forms, some of whichsavour of superstition, to revive within her a love for Popery.Of course we have no direct proof that Jesu<strong>its</strong>* took ordersin that Church, <strong>and</strong> officiated as pastors, to expedite themovement ; but few will be disposed to doubt the fact, whonow consider the whole career of Messrs Wiseman, Pusey,Ward, Newman, <strong>and</strong> who consider the <strong>history</strong> <strong>and</strong> characterof the " Tracts for the Times."Tract No. 90, where thedoctrine of reserves is broached, bears strong marks of a* When the Jesu<strong>its</strong> went to India, they stained their bodies, <strong>and</strong> sworethat they were Brahmins, who could trace their pedigree to the godBrahma.
